Qur’an class at the Linxia “Women’s School” (女校)

First year students at the Linxia “Women’s School” (女校), learning to recite the Qur’an

Recorded by Rachel Harris, 11am, 27 May 2014.

The Linxia Foreign Languages Women’s School, established just over 30 years ago, displays a very confident, cosmopolitan outlook, training its female students (aged 18 or over) in Arabic language, Qur’an, as well as Islamic history, custom and law. The headmistress boasts that many of her graduates have gone on to work in businesses trading with partners in the Middle East, and the school maintains an active international network.

These beginner students are learning the thirtieth juz of the Qur’an, and though their tajwid may not yet be of the finest, the sheer volume and power of their group recitation is impressive.
